Background and Training

Dr Rahul Chakrabarti is an Australian, sub-specialty trained comprehensive ophthalmologist. He completed his ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. He has a passion for surgical education and is the current Director of Ophthalmology Training for The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists in Victoria.

Having completed his undergraduate medical training at Monash University in 2008, Dr Chakrabarti completed his internship and residency at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. His undergraduate thesis explored the cost-utility analysis of cataract surgery. He undertook further post-graduate doctoral research in diabetic retinopathy management in low-resource settings, and a Masters of Surgical Education at the University of Melbourne. Rahul held the prestigious position of Chief Ophthalmology Registrar of the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. He completed sub specialty fellowships in strabismus and neuro-ophthalmology at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear and Alfred Hospitals; and before obtaining his Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.

Outside of medicine, Rahul is a father of three which keeps him on his toes! He plays acoustic blues guitar, enjoys tennis, table-tennis, cricket, marathon running, and is a 30-year member of the Adelaide Crows Football Club. Having grown up in Whyalla, South Australia he enjoys the outdoors and regional
work. He has trekked to Mount Everest Base Camp and enjoys astronomy and astrophotography.

Special Interests

Dr Chakrabarti is a comprehensive general ophthalmologist. His broad research and clinical experience have enabled him to have special interests in a breadth of ophthalmic procedures including:

  • Cataract surgery
  • Pterygium surgery
  • Strabismus surgery (adult and paediatric)
  • Medical retina: age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, vein occlusion
  • Intravitreal injection for ARMD, diabetic retinopathy, vein occlusion
  • Retinal Laser: retinal laser photocoagulation, Sub-threshold 2RT Laser
  • Glaucoma: Laser iridotomy, Laser trabeculoplasty, minimally-invasive glaucoma surgery
  • Electrophysiology and Neuro-ophthalmology
  • Laser capsulotomy
  • Sports-related eye injury management: He is the ophthalmologist for the Adelaide Crows Football Club (in Victoria), and is an official ophthalmologist for the AFL Doctor’s Assocation. He treats professional AFL and netball players through the Epworth Hospital East Melbourne, and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.

Surgical education:

  • Dr Chakrabarti is one of the first faculty involved with virtual
    reality cataract surgery stimulation training of eye registrars in
    Australia.
  • He is on several FRANZCO Committees including: National and
    state selection, and Curriculum Committee.

Research

Dr Chakrabarti has a breadth of research experience in basic science, clinical, and epidemiology. He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed scientific papers and a book chapter on tele-ophthalmology. His current research interestsare:

  • Ocular trauma and emergency ophthalmic disease
  • Virtual-reality simulation in ophthalmology
  • Surgical education in ophthalmology

Most recently Dr Chakrabarti was interviewed by Channel 9 as the lead author for the largest sports-related ocular trauma study conducted in Australia.
